A short history of Ceylon Tea
Since the British introduced coffee in the early 1800s, Sri Lanka was
primarily a coffee producing country. This went on until 1869, when a
fungal disease known as coffee rust wiped out the industry.
In 1867 Scottish planter James Taylor set up Sri Lanka’s first tea
plantation in the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy. Since then, Ceylon
tea has made a name for its quality, variety in taste and character
based on the different parts of the tea growing regions in Sri Lanka,
namely Nuwara Eliya, Uva, Uda Pussellawa, Dimbula, Kandy, Ruhuna
and Sabaragamuwa.
The low-grown teas, which neesh Spice specializes in, are highly
valued for the darker, richer and naturally sweet brew it produces.
